Alex and DCI Hunt lead a raid on a construction site where a drug deal is being finalized. They also discover a partially buried body in a bed of freshly poured cement. For Hunt, making the drug bust and finding the the body is just a bit too convenient. He suspects the building site foreman of being up to something but can't quite put his finger on it. He soon realizes however that someone on the team is leaking information and he sets an elaborate trap to learn who it is. Alex meanwhile knows she's about to come out of surgery in her waking life and Summers, the rogue copper from her own time, warns her that her time is running short. Suzie Colebrook is electrocuted by a roulette wheel sent to her house. She was the legal executor and supposed lover of thriller writer George Summersbee whose Jed Dagger novels she also illustrated. At the same time a newly discovered manuscript by George of an unpublished Dagger story is stolen from Suzie's home. A local crime fiction festival is going on, run by Maggie Markham, whose doctor husband Nick Summersbee has written his brother George's biography whilst George's daughter Bella, rather than estranged wife Jeanie, is his sole heir. Following a second murder Barnaby finds out that both were copied from killings in a Dagger novel though the victim was a stranger to Suzie. There are a number of people anxious for different reasons to locate the missing manuscript but there are also suggestions that it is a fake. Midsomer biscuit tycoon Eric Calder is poisoned by one of his own biscuits whilst in Copenhagen to seal a contract with businessman Albert Toft. As the goods were sent from Midsomer, detective Birgitte Poulsen asks Barnaby to investigate. He finds that Eric's son Harry had no interest in the family firm but had recently rowed with Eric whilst his wife Penelope has been having an affair with his brother Julian. Also in the frame is chief baker Armand Stone, a man with a good knowledge of chemistry. Julian is also murdered, drowned in whisky, but Barnaby and Nelson fly to Copenhagen from where a floral tribute was sent to Eric's funeral, paid for by a credit card stolen from Pastor Thomas Madsen. They find that Eric has been involved for many years with Ingrid Madsen, by whom he has a daughter. Bernard King, owner of Finchmere airfield, is knocked unconscious and dropped to his death from a plane. Though married, Conor was using the hunt as a cover to meet his girlfriend, had fallen out with the impoverished owner of the house, Simon Fergus-Johnson, who had refused to sell it to him and was disliked by local historian Brendan Pierce, whose daughter Bridgeman had seduced. Whilst the murderer is clearly human, mysterious pamphlets circulate the village, warning not to disturb the spirits, who will wreak revenge, and a second ghost hunt leads to another murder, that of pub landlord Ross Clymer, lover of Simon's wife and enemy of army deserter Ollie Tabori, the former boyfriend of Simon's put upon sister Valerie. Alice appeals to Henry, who unites all the planters into a collective with an agreed fixed price, approved by Yeardley. Defeated in this respect Massinger, backed by Redwick and Farlow, has another plan - to bring African slaves to work for him. Temperance, shocked by her husband's collusion in the matter, agrees to keep Jocelyn's secret but a celebratory harvest dance is interrupted as Massinger brings his slaves to Jamestown. Alice Kett however and Verity Bridges are to marry men they have never met. Alice falls for handsome Silas Sharrow but must wed his oafish brother Henry, who rapes her and is displeased to forfeit land in exchange for marriage, though when he is later blown up looking for gold she seems to have her chance with the gentle Silas.
